Social Media in business is more important than you think.

I work for a YMCA that is the least innovative company I have ever worked for. On numerous occasions, I have shared the importance of having a Twitter feed to update members on the status of the group exercise schedules. I have offered to update their Facebook page more often with what is going on around the facility. Both platforms still go without any attention.

What the specific location does not know is other local gyms are constantly updating their feeds with promotions, photos of the activities, member comments, stories and fitness classes. While those gyms continue to be successful on social media platforms, our members go uninformed and starting Googling other gyms in the area to start working out at.

A portion of this article that stuck with me and made the most sense was the consistency of followers that come when they audience has been won over with the company’s branding. According to Julie Chomiak, writer of 4 Big Benefits of Social Media for Business, stated, “Once you’ve won over your social media branding, your follower base will grow and be full of potential customers.”

The most popular platforms make that task cheap and simple, which is appealing to businesses who are looking for low cost marketing techniques. Many local businesses are major advocates for social media because it is an easy, cheap way that most people are already involved in.
